Flat Roofing
We have been fixing flat roofs at FRRC for many years now.
Typical old style flat roofs were constructed of either stramit board or chipboard. When a flat roof constructed of chipboard leaks this usually means that the
chipboard is soaking up water like a sponge and the roof usually requires re-decking.
There are a few ways to construct a flat roof:
- There is the old fashioned hot bitumen way which involves cross bonding 3 layers of felt the felts used can either be fibre based or high tensile.
- Using torch on felts that have bitumen in the roll. When heated the bitumen melts and forms the seal as you cross bond. Torch on felts tend to have polyester sandwiched between the bitumen which helps it not to rip.
For both of these methods we recommend the use of solar reflective paints as a finish. Without solar paint the roof would bake in the summer causing contraction and expansion which usually results in faster deterioration of the materials. We would recommend maintenance of the flat roof and this involves applying the paint at least every 2 years, this helps the flat roof to have a greater life expectancy.
New to the market is the Firestone rubber flat roof with a 20 yr Guarantee this system involves the fitting of rubber sheets and comes with trims to accommodate.
