Q. What is Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane?
A. Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM is a 100% cured single-ply roofing membrane made of a synthetic rubber. Since 1980, more than 1,000,000,000 m² of Firestone EPDM membranes have been installed on commercial, industrial and residential roofs worldwide. Q. Does Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM Membrane have an up and underside?
A. No, there’s no difference between the top and bottom of the membrane.
Q. Does the membrane need a protective top coat?
A. No, the membrane is resistant to both UV & ozone.
Q. How long will the membrane last?
A. Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membranes offer unmatched resistance to UV radiation, ozone, alkali rains and extreme temperatures. This product has a life expectancy of more than 50 years, even when in sunlight.
Q. Does Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM require maintenance?
A. Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM roofing system requires no specific maintenance. However, Firestone recommends a yearly inspection of the roof.
Q. Can certain materials damage Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM?
A. The membrane is less resistant to oil products. Avoid any contact with mineral and vegetable oils, petroleum based products, fresh bitumen and grease.
Q. How is damaged Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM repaired?
A. It is easy to repair any damage, with a piece of Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing.
Q. Is Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane available in different colours?
A. No, it is only available in black.
Q. Which substrates are suitable for adhesion of Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM?
A. Compatible substrates are wood, PIR and PUR insulation, bitumen, concrete, masonry, aluminium, zinc and lead. Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM can overlay virtually any old roof, provided the roof decking is sound and the structure can carry the load of the new roofing system.
Q. Can Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane be adhered on a wet surface?
A. No, remove any ponded water, snow, frost and ice before installation.
Q. Must the roof surface be cleaned before adhesion of Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM?
A. The surface must be clean, smooth, dry and free of sharp and/or loose objects and/or foreign materials such as oil, grease, and/or other contaminants. Therefore, we recommend sweeping the substrate with a brush prior to the installation of the membrane.
Q. Is the use of Firestone Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive weather dependent?
A. Yes, the minimum temperature required for application of Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive is + 5°C and the maximum humidity is 80%.
Q. Is one-sided application of Firestone Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive sufficient?
A. No, always apply Firestone Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive two sided. This is to both the underside of the membrane as well as to the substrate.
Q. What is the coverage rate of Firestone Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive?
A. Coverage: 1 litre per 2 m² (two-sided).
Q. Must the membrane be cleaned before applying Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickPrime Plus?
A. No, unless the membrane is extremely dirty. If this is the case, clean with water and a clean rag.
Q. Which products require application of Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickPrime Plus?
A. Use Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickPrime Plus primer with ALL Firestone QuickSeam products. This is to clean and prime the membrane before application of the QuickSeam products.
Q. Are specific tools required for installation?
A. Besides the Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickScrubber tool and hand roller, you will also need other materials. Such tools include scissors, measurer, solvent resistant paint roller, chalk line, bucket, mixer (for Bonding Adhesive), clean rags and a broom.
Q. Does installation require any precautions?
A. Only use Firestone Rubber Cover™ Bonding Adhesive and Firestone RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus in well ventilated areas. Also, keep both products away from ignition sources. Do not smoke when using. Wear gloves when applying Firestone Rubber Cover™ QuickPrime Plus. For further information, please consult the Material Safety Data Sheets and the information shown on the product labels.
Q. Which drains can be used with Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane?
A. Use the following materials for insert drains: EPDM, zinc, flexible PVC, galvanized and stainless steel.
Q. Can Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane be in contact with a hot pipe penetration (e.g. chimney)?
A. Double-walled penetrations are a necessity.
Q. Can I walk on a Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM roof?
A. The roof is accessible for periodical maintenance. However, if there is to be regular roof traffic, protect the membrane with pavers.
Q. Can Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane be used for lining applications?
A. No, it is only suitable for roofs, façades and gutters.
Q. Can Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM be combined with a Green Roof System?
A. To combine with a Green Roof System, place a sedum vegetation over the membrane. Only when using a root resistant geotextile between the vegetation and membrane is this possible. Also, take in to account a 30cm distance between the vegetation and all roof installation details.
Q. Can the Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane be ballasted?
A. Yes, it is possible to cover the membrane with gravel, pavers or bankirai wood. However, always fully adhere the membrane to the substrate. Also, Firestone recommends the use of a protective geotextile (polyester 300 g/m²) between the membrane and the ballast.
Q. Is there a warranty for Firestone Rubber Cover™ EPDM membrane?
A. Firestone provides a 10 year material warranty.
